What I Got

I got nothing from Conquer the Invisible.

Let me explain.

We spent a lot of time discovering our “I Am”, a deep expression of the Soul. My initial one was “I am separated”. Then, “I am magnificent”. Then, “I am the Glory”. That was followed, for me, by the more specific, “I am is here now”. It then seemed to me that even “here now” was extraneous, so I dropped down to the simple direct statement “I am”.

When I returned home I read an incredible book by Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj entitled I AM THAT. He speaks of the process I went through and then asks that we drop “I am”. What is then left is pure conscious awareness. It’s wordless, it’s the essence of nothing, of no-thing.

So…I got nothing from the Workshop.

Thank you deeply Barry.

~~ Martin

Sri Nisargadatta Mahara said, “My advice to you is very simple – just remember yourself, ‘I am’, it is enough to heal your mind and take you beyond, just have some trust”. I AM THAT is a collection of the timeless teachings of one of the greatest sages of India, Sri Nisargadatta Mahara.

Profound Realities

Retreat RoomSince getting back from Costa Rica, I have had a a chance to reflect on some of my experiences. In one way, I can appreciate what a woman’s experience of birth might be. At first you have the ecstasy of conception, then the awkwardness of carrying the pregnancy. The time of labour seems unbearable and overwhelming, and then a new life happens. All those thoughts of conception, pregnancy and labour are quickly replaced by the beauty and AWE of the new-born.

This is what I experienced in Costa Rica. Since returning, participants have been sharing their experience with me. They are telling me how “busy seems different now”, they have a new clarity and confidence – they see things differently, they are more “focused” and they have made ‘big decisions’ that is putting their life on a more practical and real path where they can make “big” and “meaningful difference” that is going to change our world. For some, these small local changes within their communities, others have stepped up to the plate with no less of a dream than to “save our world” and “ground America in Truth”.

RetreatThis has been truly inspiring and so I have asked each of the participants to share his/her “Dream” with you and the rest of the world. We have posted a Wall of Dreams where you can read what other people who came as mortals are doing for our world and what is truly possible.

I invite you to visit our Wall of Dreams where stories are told by some of the people who have participated in our workshops. Please explore the Profound Realities that other people believe are possible.

It Was Awesome!

I am sitting on the plane returning from an awesome experience in Costa Rica with 18 other brilliant people including my colleague, Martin Rutte, who are committed to making our world a better place. They came from across North America bringing their diversity and good nature to a 1400 acre eco-resort set in the heart of the rain-forest. It was the perfect place with the right people doing the right thing at the right time.

They came as lawyer, writer, scientist, business owner, and ecologist. They left as Legion, Truth Teller, Seeker, Provider and Heart Lover. They came as young and old (26 to 86) and they left with the energy of purpose knowing clearly how they are going to bring the gift from their deep truth of Self to the world. We co-created a Profound Reality in Costa Rica and each of the 18 accomplished people left with the dream, the vision, the mission and the plan on how they as individuals can and will make a Profound Difference in our world.

Julie is inspired to create a good news TV show, Debra has a clear idea of how to banish the suffering of animals and Ewart has found the inner conviction to banish the myth of inability amongst children. Jeff is committed to making his business a model for other organizations on how to incent employees to leave their cars at home and commute by bicycle, and King has developed the clarity to make The Amazing Law of Influence more actionable in our world. Each person discovered the freedom to make a more meaningful difference that leaves a lasting legacy.

This process of Conquering the Invisible to create Profound Realities was witnessed by a Hollywood film crew to be part of a pilot for a new documentary How to Achieve a Heaven on Earth based on the book of essays edited by John Wade. As this documentary comes into the homes of millions of people, we will have created even more Profound Reality.

IT WAS AWESOME!!!

It was so awesome that we are putting together our next Conquer the Invisible workshop retreat and will be posting new dates in the next few weeks. We are also launching our Women Leading Men workshops based on the same principles.

We are committed to making our world a better place and creating Profound Realities by bringing our gifts to you.

Heaven on Earth… If I had a Magic Wand

In a few days Martin Rutte and I will be in Costa Rica with 19 accomplished people exploring how they can make a Profound Difference for our world. I challenged Julie Burtinshaw, author of 5 fiction books, contributor to How to Achieve a Heaven on Earth and participant in Conquer the Invisible in Costa Rica if she had a magic wand, what difference would she make. Here is Julie’s response!

~~ Barry

Thank you for this opportunity to participate.

Julie BurtinshawOn the surface, this is such a simple question: if you could wave a magic wand and co-create Heaven on Earth, what would that difference be like? Everyone longs for a magic wand. How often have you thought to yourself, or heard someone say, “if only I had one wish…” But what would you do with that wish? The whole planet needs help – the dying oceans, the vanishing rain forests, the species facing extinction, the starving millions, the illiterate adults, the child soldiers, the thirsty savannas, and the blood-soaked “theatres” where wars are waged.

It’s too much, it’s hopeless – you can have your wand back, I’ve got stuff to do.

Wait. Think big. Think bigger. Think gigantic. Think colossal. Imagine a world where kindness usurps power, where compassion walks hand-in-hand with progress, where water is as valuable as oil, where life is as important as profits, where education carries as much weight as gold? A world where people no longer feel hopeless to create change.

Imagine a world where every single person understood his or her individual power to make a difference?

No. It would just be easier to donate to my favourite charity…

I am surprised at how much courage it takes to accept this magic wand, but here goes:

And with a wave of my wand, people from all corners of the earth would wake from their long sleep and realize that they already have what it takes inside of them to create a better world. In the blink of an eye, they’d understand the words of John Lennon – “We can change the world, rearrange the world – it’s dying, to get started.”

In the blink of an eye, people everywhere would recognize the tremendous power they have inside of them to begin to take the first few giant steps toward achieving a heaven on earth.

Business and Relationships

Often I am asked, “What difference does Conquer the Invisible make”? Perhaps the best way to share this is through the eyes of Larry.

Father and SonAbout twelve years ago, Larry made a big step; he left his secure job to start his own professional services business.  Larry’s business has prospered and he now has six employees. To get it to this point, Larry has felt he has had to work 70 hours a week to take care of all the things, do business development and service his personal clients. Larry didn’t mind this, he thought of himself as a good provider for his family, but it did put him in conflict of how he saw himself as a great father. Spending so much time on his business didn’t give him much time for his children who were now getting ready to leave home.

Larry’s son was nearing graduation and was struggling with the big questions of purpose and what he should do next. His son’s way of dealing with this struggle was to retreat to the bedroom. Larry wanted what was best for his son and saw this behaviour as risky – he was being a “lazy bum” and he should get out there and get a job or go to school. Because Larry only had short times for his son – when he spoke – his conversations were curt, businesslike and flavoured with his fears for his son. This of course only caused his son to retreat deeper into his room.

After the Conquer the Invisible workshop, Larry saw himself in a different light, something that he described as being a much deeper truth. He no longer saw himself as a businessman, provider or father. He saw himself as “I AM” a “Chandler”.  For Larry, “Chandler” has a very special meaning and so as Larry approached his business, he was no longer a businessman, he was a Chandler who does business; and he was no longer a father, he was a Chandler who does fathering.

As Larry took this to the real world, profound things started to happen. He was able to communicate with his son in a completely different way which opened up their relationship in ways Larry had only dreamed about. Out of this, he has been able to help his son explore careers and register in a program that seems to be a good fit. Their relationship has blossomed and they can now have conversations about things that use to be untouchable. More than that, Larry was able to reduce his time at work from 70 hours a week to between 40 and 50 and, to his surprise, business has increased.

What used to be impossible for Larry is now a Profound Reality.

Join me for one of my upcoming webinars where we’ll discuss more about Profound Realities.

Leadership is a Relationship

leadershipI work with lots of entrepreneurs and leaders in a broad variety of situations and I have witnessed a large variety of leadership styles. Peter Drucker defined leadership as “someone who others follow” which is a recognition that there is not one correct style of leadership. Even so, the common defining characteristic of all leadership styles is it is a relationship.

When you are in a leadership role, whether this is at work, in the community or at home, what kind of relationship do you have?

From my experience, these relationships fall into one of two kinds:

  • Fear and control – I have to because I have to
  • Inspirational – I want to because I want to

Both styles of relationship get results, but the quantity and quality of results can be dramatically different.

Both leadership styles come from a sense of personal identity. How I see myself determines how I treat others. When I see myself as smart, in control, commanding fear – I can get results, but I don’t feel as good. I see how people avoid me, and the looks they give.

When I see myself from a deep sense of truth, I am more able to bring humility, trustworthiness and trusting to the relationship. It is easier to create a vision that inspires because that is about a greater good that includes others and is worthy of other people’s efforts. I find myself laughing more at the interesting twists life brings.
Results are better and more fun.

Time for Self

time for selfIn our world of busy, it is easy to get carried away on a stream of stuff. Even though I preach the importance of vision, focus and space, I find it a challenge to maintain open space. There are so many agendas that want to creep in and occupy whatever space I create. Yet space is where opportunity, interesting and meaningful happens. It is where we create profound and new realities.

The best way I have found to keep this space open is to take time every day for daily reflection. In this time, I am able to reground myself in what is truly important and bring back the focus that brings these important to the forefront. I also am able to bring awareness to what is cluttering up the space and what I am prepared to let go of. By doing this daily, I find that the space stays open for longer periods of time.

Even so, the creep of other people’s important agendas eventually clogs the space up so that there is hardly any moving room. This calls for a major house cleaning, and so I have learned the best way to do this is take a three day personal retreat. I go off to a cabin in the woods, leave my cellphone, computer, wife and dogs behind and spend three days in solitude with myself.

This is hard work. There is no one tougher to be with than myself. It takes time to let go of all the noise, busy and important and make friends with myself again. By the third day, I am able to sit in quiet and open space once again. This always pays big dividends. Important questions that I have struggled with are answered with clarity, I have new creative power and feel free and energized. I am always way more productive then the lost time and Susan and the dogs always appreciates the reinvigorated me when I return.

I schedule these retreats once every three months. I am due for one now. How about you?

Technology and I

I am going up a very steep learning curve with communication technology these days. I have started doing webinars, using services like constant contact, have created a web page that uses a technology that is easy to edit, have familiarized myself with Google Analytics, bought a new computer that needs an endless amount of Tweeting, have started blogging, have created Facebook and LinkedIn sites, and have started using my BlackBerry in new ways. The book where I keep passwords for all the different services I now use is nearing full.

This might seem like, “So what”? For me, it seems like “Oh My Gosh”.

What I have discovered is the more time I spend with technology, the more challenging it is to be centered and present, open and creative. It seems like technology takes control of my mind and turns me into a zombie. A day on the computer and my mind is incredibly fatigued – a day with people and I am invigorated – a day with myself and I am a creative powerhouse.

What does this say about effectiveness and productivity?

Am I alone in this?

Do Meaning and Success Have to be Separate?

Many of the executives I meet want two things – they want real and substantial business results and they want to feel like they are making a meaningful difference for the world around them. Often they see these as two different things.

Sarah perhaps expressed this sentiment best. “I have a successful professional services business, I am very good at what I do and my business is in high demand. Last year I spent two weeks of my vacation building a house for someone in Guatemala. It brought tears to my eyes. Why can’t my work do the same thing for me? How come I have to work 350 days to do something meaningful with the other 15 days?”

Meaning and success do not have to be separate. When you see the world though the Truth of Authentic Self, results, meaning, and purpose align. When you see yourself through the eyes of Authentic Self, you are able to align work with your deep sense of purpose. You can have both meaning and success.

Is this just idealism? Tom wouldn’t say so. Tom struggled for years to resolve his conflict as an executive in the financial services world. Tom’s sense of ethics put him in conflict with the goals of his employer. Tom was very good at his job and had the capability to do a lot more. When he was challenged with the idea of creating his own financial services company, Tom rejected the idea – it just wasn’t practical to create his own. After discovering this Truth of Authentic Self, Tom, used all his previous experience and knowledge to create a new mutual fund company that operates by his own sense of ethic.

Can you answer these three questions clearly and succinctly:

  1. Who is your Truth of Authentic Self?
  2. What is the gift that you are compelled to bring to the world?
  3. What is keeping you from doing that?

Do you see work and meaning as two separate things?

Conquer the Big Battle

When most people talk about personal or professional development, they often use the language of war and aggression. They talk about wrestling the demons, getting over the barriers, or knocking down the obstacles. They talk about getting over or past themselves, or getting out of their own way.

It’s like there is this other person inside them that is sabotaging their best intentions and efforts and the best way to deal with this is either bury that saboteur so deep that it could never get out or beat it into submission.

Of course this doesn’t work. Most people have tried it and usually this just makes them feel bad. And so they make work around solutions and accept or justify their limitations.

Is there something that might actually work? How do you Conquer the demon inside?

We have found that awareness has much greater affect. When people understand how these saboteurs came to be, what their purpose is and how they operate within you, they lose their power. When people become aware that these saboteurs were created with the intention of enabling them to deal with the stuff of life, to get through challenges and make life easier, they lose their power. When people become aware that these saboteurs are creations, fabrications and not the truth, they lose their power.

When people become aware that saboteurs are not the truth and when people become aware that there is a real truth to who they are, they become powerful. They can develop the skill to recognize the difference between fabrication and truth and choose the truth.

Then, in the words of Audre Lorde:
“When I dare to be powerful-
To use my strength (truth of I AM) in the service of my vision
Then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid.”
